A virtual guide to Tuvalu, formerly known as the Ellice Islands, a Polynesian island nation located in the Central Pacific Ocean just below the equator and about 1,000 km north of Fiji and about 2,000 km east of the Solomon Islands.
The Ellice Islands were administered as a British Protectorate, they were part of the British Western Pacific Territories from 1892 to 1916. In 1916 the British established the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony which existed until 1974. Tuvalu became independent on 1 October 1978. |

According to news.com.au, with some of the money earned in the .tv deal, Tuvalu was finally able to afford the $100,000 it cost to join the United Nations.
